San Jose State University
Food Culture in Japan
Study Tour Summer 2019
Tokyo & Nagano, JAPAN

Enjoy Studies abroad was pleased to welcome and host 13 students from San Jose State (SJSU), California for a July 1-15, 2019. Natsuko Tsuji, Adjunct Faculty and Dietician organized the trip as part of a Faculty Led Program from SJSU. The students had a wonderful two week program consisting of many hands on activities and tours designed to teach them all about the food and culture in Japan, with an emphasis on Nutrition. We started our program in Tokyo for more cultural visits, but also had an introduction on Agriculture in Japan at the American Embassy, learned about Food Systems in Japanese schools, visited markets and temples and a Soy sauce factory. We enjoyed different Japanese specialties as Tempura and Sushi, and experienced a traditional tea ceremony.
The next days we were lucky to have a unique stay in a farm village were the students got to live with Japanese families, where we learned how to cook home recipies like soba, but also visited a sake factory.
The highlight of our trip was to stay one night at a Ryokan for a total relaxation and dinner of the local specialties.
Back to Tokyo, we had a whole day for ourselves to explore before heading back home.
