Paris Arts – 14 Days
From Gothic and Romanesque to Picasso and Tapies
Why we think that Art students should come and join this faculty-led tour?
Catalonia is a region of North East Spain situated between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean sea. Experience first hand the rich cultural history of Spain and the importance of European value-added art and architecture in Barcelona and surroundings.
Program Overview
Paris Art Immersion is the perfect option for art students to get in touch directly and for two weeks with one of the most culturally stimulating cities in the world. In this program students will stay in the heart of the Marais area in shared rooms, just a few minutes from the Seine River and Notre Dame cathedral. The metro is next to the Residency, which allows them to easily access Museums and cultural areas of the City of Lights. Students don’t need to know French language.

The program offers one 3-credit art history course on the history of nineteenth-century French art taught in the museums of Paris. Students learn about Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, academic painting, Impressionism, Symbolism, Neo-Impressionism, Expressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism through visits the Louvre, the Orsay, the Orangerie, Monet’s House and Gardens, the Museum of Impressionisms, the Marmottan, the studio of Symbolist painter Gustave Moreau, and the Centre Pompidou. Through first-hand engagement with the objects, students learn about how styles and iconography shifted over the nineteenth century. The class also considers questions of how museum installation makes an impact on visitor experience. Students write responses to individual objects in the museums around thematic questions. The final visual analysis papers ask students to consider the changes that took place in nineteenth-century art, as well as questions of museum display In addition, the program costs include a field trip to the charming nearby village of Giverny, three gourmet meals in Paris restaurants, and a boat cruise along the Seine. Weekends are free for students to explore Paris in small groups or travel to nearby regions.
