A Taste of Spain

Study Tour Winter 2020

Barcelona & Girona, SPAIN

Enjoy Studies abroad was pleased to welcome another group of 15 students from San Jose State (SJSU), California from January 9-18, 2019. Deepa S., MS RDN, Lecturer in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science organized the trip as part of a Faculty Led Program from SJSU. The students had a wonderful ten day program consisting of many hands on activities and tours designed to teach them all about the food and culture in Catalonia, Spain as well as explore the food system from an agriculture perspective. We started our program in Barcelona, where we stayed 6 days. We enjoyed a TAPAS tasting menu, explored the most important sights near the Gothic Quarter like the Born Quarter as well as enjoyed some chocolate tastings, some spanish ham and some xurros with hot chocolate! We have learned about Spain’s culinary roots and of course its specialties.

We also had time for some Museums and a day dedicated to cava (sparkling wine) and its champenoise method of elaboration.

Then we have travelled to a very different location: Girona. Much more quiet and relaxed, it was the perfect location to visit a cheese maker, an olive oil producer all the while also enjoying some great mediterranean cuisine and a fun cooking class focused on sustainable fishing.

Exploring art, culture, food, agriculture, and architecture provided a complete program of experiential learning for the students who came from many different academic backgrounds including Nutrition, Communications, Health Science, Sociology, Hospitality, Kinesiology, Design and much more..
